About:
San Pedro has been dubbed as “dormitory town” of Metro Manila of migrants from other provinces commuting everyday through its highly efficient road and transport system. With a population of 294,310 in 2010, density is about 12,000 per square kilometer, the highest in the province of Laguna. As a first class municipality, it became a component city of Laguna by virtue of RA 10420 sponsored by Senator Bongbong Marcos dated March 27, 2013.
Historical Background:
San Pedro’s historical past can be traced to 1725 when it became a town when Spanish King Charles II decreed that the town known as ‘Tabuko” be separated from Cabuyao. When Augustinian Fathers gained the ownership of the Tunasan Estate, San Pedro became a hacienda of the Jesuits which took over the property known as San Pedro Tunasan. Tunas came from Tunas a medicinal plant abundant in the lakeshore.
During this period, agriculture, fishing, duck raising, fruit trees and sampaguita planting were the main source of livelihood. San Pedro’s history was marred by tenant landlord dispute over the ancestral land for several decades which culminated in the government purchase of the hacienda from the Colegio de San Jose in 1938 for resale to the tenants. However, the tenancy dispute divided the tenants on the issue of repaying the government of the land.
President Ramon Magsaysay signed the land tenancy act in 1954 purchasing the farm lots in Bayan Bayanan under the Narra Resettlement Project. San Pedro became a resettlement area for families in Metro Manila in 1968 to 1971. Thereon population significantly increased with the rise of several GSIS/SSS housing projects in 1975. Industries sprouted in the succeeding years such as the Aclem Paper Mills, Holiday Hills Golf and Country Club (now Tat), Philippine Tobacco Flu Curing Corporation, Berbacs Chemicals, US Tobacco Corporation, Holland Milk Products, Trinity Lodge Mining Corporation, Kimberly Clark, Cosmos, among others.
The succeeding administration of ex Mayors Felicisimo Vierneza and Calixto Cataquiz brought significant changes in the political, economic and cultural landscape of San Pedro. There were major commercial and industrial developments during the administration of Mayor Vierneza starting 1972 while Mayor Cataquiz’s 12- year administration in 1986 focused on residential subdivisions with massive infrastructure projects and beautification programs.
Geographic Location:
San Pedro is located in the Region 4A or CALABARZON. San Pedro is the boundary between Laguna and Metro Manila. So San Pedro is known as “Laguna’s Gateway to Metro Manila”. San Pedro shares boundaries with Metro Manila’s Southernmost City, Muntinlupa (North), Biñan (South), and Dasmariñas (East), Carmona and Gen. Mariano Alvarez (Southeast). Its position makes San Pedro a popular suburban residential community, where many residents commute daily for work to Metro Manila. Support groups from the local government and non-government organizations are striving to incorporate San Pedro into Metro Manila by the year 2015.
